DECEPTION

Nothing as it seems

Life is full of illusion

With You/Without You

With you I was whole, my life was complete.
I was ready to share all your pain and joy.
Without you, I am empty--there's a hole
In my heart where your love used to be.

With you, I was a woman of strength and power
Who finally knew just what she wanted from life.
Without you, I'm that lost little girl, frightened and alone,
Who struggles to find a reason to go on every day.

With you, I believed in undying love again
And in dreams that could come true at last.
Without you, my heart is shattered beyond repair
And dreams have turned to nightmares and sorrow.

Wish Upon A Star

Did you ever wish upon a shooting star
To be with the one who's now so far
And did you ever cry for someone who
You once thought loved and adored only you?

Does your mind ever wander in the night,
Thinking about someone who's out of sight?
Do you look to the heavens for just a clue
That I'm out there somewhere, still thinking of you?

Happy (?) Anniversary

Even though you're not here
And may never be again,
I haven't forgotten what day it is
Or what it used to mean to US.
Thirteen months ago today
We admitted to feeling "something"
With no idea where that would lead,
Yet it wasn't long before we both
Promised "forever and beyond"--
And even though you've changed your mind,
I never will.

Trapped

I wrote this one on 12/03/10 and posted it, but later deleted it. Think it needs to be here, though.

The iron bars slam closed
And she knows she's lost her last chance...
Escape will never come.

It was almost in her grasp,
Or so she thought,
But it was nothing but illusion.

Now she'll smile and go through the motions
Living "the perfect life"
Till she finds the way to make her final exit.

Walls

Looking through my poetry notebook, and realized I never posted this one, which is very apropos right now, even though it was written January 12, 1983.

WALLS
In younger days she trusted everyone--
Her little world was perfect, and no one could hurt her.
Life was full of sunshine and laughter, and she grew up expecting it to always be that way.
Then one day her perfect world, and her family, fell apart,
Chipping away at her trust bit by bit, day by day.
Just when she had begun to trust again, believing in a man,
He threw her young heart back in her face
As though it meant nothing, when he was everything to her.
This time it took years to rebuild her trust,
And with it came a wall to protect her from pain--
No one was ever going to hurt her again!
No one could break through to her heart,
until a man came into her life with such pretty words.
He promised sweetness the rest of their lives,
but as soon as he had taken what he wanted,
he became pushy and arrogant.
Soon she knew they were over and said goodbye--
more pain and anger to rebuild the wall
and more years spent learning to trust once more.
When she decided to take a chance the third time,
she promised herself not to let go until she was sure--
Sure this man was worthy of her trust and love.
How could she have known he'd say and do all the right things
just long enough for her to lose her heart completely,
then turn away and pretend she wasn't there?
Now she'll never trust another man with her heart,
and the wall of resentment is too thick for anyone to break through.
